  • Combating the Fentanyl Crisis: The fentanyl epidemic has devastated families across our communities. Under Thien’s leadership he has:
  • Launched the "1 Pill Can Kill" Education Program, reaching over 50,000 students, parents, and community members.
  • Created the SacForce Fentanyl Investigative Team to hold traffickers accountable.
  • Led historic prosecutions, charging fentanyl dealers with murder for the first time in Sacramento County history.
  • Cut fentanyl-related deaths in half through targeted enforcement and education
  • Reducing Gun Violence: Committed to keeping our neighborhoods safe.
  • Introduced the Student GIFT Program, educating high school students on the dangers of gun violence.
  • Partnered with "Brother-to-Brother", a nonprofit focused on gun violence prevention for individuals on probation.
  • Cracking Down on Retail Theft: Retail theft has hurt local businesses and communities.
  • Establishing the Organized Retail Theft (ORT) Unit, leading to nearly $1 million in prosecutions.
  • Creating the "Top 10 Offender Program", targeting repeat offenders and reducing crime rates.
  • Leading on Proposition 36: Thien Recognized the need for balanced reforms and took action by:
  • Leading the statewide campaign supporting Proposition 36, which passed with nearly 70% voter approval.
  • Developed best practices for implementing Proposition 36 across California.
  • Emphasized mass treatment over mass incarceration, ensuring a fair and effective approach to public safety.

Connecting Communities

  • Expanding Resources for Victims: Supporting victims and ensuring justice is a top priority. Thien's advocacy:
  • Created GetHelpSac.org, a resource hub for victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, and elder abuse.
  • Established Phyliss’ Garden, a safe space for children and victims of violence to share their stories.
  • Organized the Voices for Victims Summit, amplifying the voices of crime survivors and ensuring their needs are met.
  • Strengthening Community Partnerships
  • Launched the Community Relations Council, bringing together representatives from diverse backgrounds to advise the District Attorney’s Office.
  • Hosted the Public Safety Lunch, supporting local nonprofits dedicated to crime prevention and victim support.

Preserving Promises

  • Addressing the Homeless Crisis: Tackling homelessness with accountability and compassion
  • Filed the first lawsuit in the nation against a city for failing to address the homelessness crisis.
  • Achieved a 41% reduction in unsheltered individuals and a 28.7% decrease in overall homelessness in 2024.
  • Filed an environmental lawsuit to prevent pollution from encampments affecting Sacramento’s rivers and watershed.
  • Implemented the CORE Program, providing drug and mental health treatment for unhoused defendants.
